ENCLOSED by the larger islands, the Lomaiviti region of Fiji is a vast blue ocean dotted with small islands. Lomaiviti is Fijian for 'central Fiji'. Uncommercialised and offering a unique island vacation experience are a small number of resorts in this region. These include Toberua Island Resort (pictured at top), Naigani Island Resort, and the exclusive Wakaya Club & Spa. The larger island of Ovalau offers budget accommodation opportunities, with diving one of the main activities. Its main town of Levuka is a quaint snapshot of Fiji's colonial era with a main street of fascinating buildings and small hotels. Levuka was the original capital of Fiji, before government was relocated to its present location of Suva in 1877. This shift is the reason why Levuka has retained its unique Colonial charm.
